On the 55th World Earth Day, the company actively responded to the theme of the 2024 World Earth Day, “Planet vs. Plastics”, by inviting over 200 cyclists, including green lifestyle advocates and cycling enthusiasts from government organizations, the business community, public welfare institutions, community residents, and campus teachers and students, to participate in the second edition of the “Lithium and the Earth” Greenway Public Welfare Cycling Event. The event aimed to spread the environmental protection concepts of “global battle against plastics” and “low-carbon travel” among participants, calling on everyone to jointly protect the planet.

On April 20th, with the spring breeze blowing and a fine drizzle falling, everyone embarked on a 28-kilometer low-carbon cycling journey along the lush Chengdu Tianfu Greenway, starting from the scenic Jincheng Lake. The cyclists aimed to advocate for a healthy lifestyle and environmental protection concept of green travel by reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the global battle against plastics.

Why fight against plastics?

According to research by the United Nations Environment Programme, over 14 million metric tons of plastic enter and disrupt aquatic ecosystems each year. Meanwhile, humans produce approximately 460 million metric tons of plastic annually, and if urgent action is not taken, this figure could double by 2060. These figures illustrate the serious problems caused by plastic pollution, which threaten the environment, human health, and the economy. Marine ecosystems are being polluted, leading to threats to marine life and even the potential for complete destruction. Additionally, plastic pollution poses hazards to human health, such as the cumulative effects of microplastic particles found in drinking water, which may ultimately have long-term impacts on human health.

The theme for World Earth Day 2024 is "Planet vs Plastics," calling on society as a whole to engage in environmental conservation efforts. EARTHDAY.ORG, the global organizer of Earth Day, advocates for urgent collective action to confront the plastic crisis and aims to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040, striving for a plastic-free future, as recycling alone is not a sustainable solution.

Experts at the Sixth United Nations Environment Assembly emphasized the urgent need for a global economic transformation to curb the existential threats posed by plastics to nature and humanity. In furtherance of advocating for global action against plastic pollution and strengthening green, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly lifestyles, Tianqi Lithium actively responds to international environmental calls, contributing to the creation of a clean future free of plastic pollution.

On April 20th, 2024, Tianqi Lithium will host the second annual "Lithium and Earth" Green Cycling event at JinCheng Square in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, joining the ranks of the "Planet vs Plastics" movement and standing in solidarity with the Earth.

Event Highlights:

As a global advocate for sustainable development, Tianqi Lithium has consistently promoted the coordinated development of the economy, society, and environment, exploring sustainable development and a carbon-neutral future. This event is not just a cycling event but also a call to action, urging all sectors of society to collectively reduce plastic usage and promote environmentally friendly travel methods.

1. Zero Carbon, Plastic-Free: All setups for this event will avoid the use of single-use plastics and instead utilize environmentally friendly, recyclable, or biodegradable materials. Participants will have the opportunity to sign a global petition against plastics on-site. Through this innovative practice, we aim to demonstrate to participants and society the possibility and importance of reducing plastic usage.

2. Turning Waste into Treasure: At the finish line, there will be a recycled plastic experience activity, educating participants on plastic pollution and environmentally friendly travel. Participants will use plastic waste generated on-site to create medals.

Let us declare our commitment to environmental protection and action to the world through the power of cycling. This Earth Day cycling event is not only a response to the "Planet vs Plastics" theme but also a call for all sectors of society to collectively reduce plastic usage, promote environmentally friendly travel methods, and alleviate pressure on the Earth, contributing to a better future.

On April 20th, join Tianqi Lithium for the second annual Green Cycling event, as we unite in the "Planet vs Plastics" movement!
