Tianqi Lithium strictly adheres to environmental protection laws and regulations and continually improves and refines its environmental management system. It is dedicated to the normative and effective management of natural resources through a comprehensive set of measures, including the enhancement of management systems, optimization of management structures, and implementation of certification processes. The company discloses environmental metrics and verification outcomes related to exhaust and wastewater emissions, hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource consumption at the organizational level in its annual sustainability report.

In its operational activities, Tianqi Lithium maintains a firm commitment to the principle that economic interests must never override safety, environmental sustainability, and health considerations. Guided by such principle, the company has continuously undertaken technological renovations and equipment upgrades across various bases to enhance resource efficiency and consistently fostered its mission for green transformation through the implementation of a series of clean production initiatives that have led to significant advancements in waste gas and wastewater treatment capabilities.

Water Resource Management

In response to potential water scarcity risks at production sites and to avoid wasting water resources, Tianqi Lithium has utilized the water risk map developed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to assess water resources across all

production sites, revealing that a total of 0 sites were located in high-risk areas. To understand the impact of water resource management on local stakeholders, the company has actively engaged with local communities and residents to evaluate the effectiveness of its water management measures. Additionally, the company has established a water resource management system to monitor, assess, and improve water usage. Policies and plans for water conservation have been developed, with defined objectives, responsible departments, and implementation steps to ensure the effective execution of water-saving initiatives.

Exhaust Gas Management

Tianqi Lithium is committed to reducing exhaust gas emissions during its production processes. Each production base has established an Emission Management Procedure to control both organized and unorganized exhaust gas pollutants generated during mining, smelting, processing, and transportation. Additionally, we continuously improve emissions by using high-quality materials, clean energy, and advanced technologies. We also promote the installation and use of real-time emissions monitoring systems to accurately track pollutant emissions and totals, ensuring that stakeholders in the business areas and surrounding environments remain unaffected.

Waste Management

Tianqi Lithium strictly adheres to harmless principles and the 3R management concept for comprehensive waste management. Each production base has dedicated departments responsible for waste management, aiming to promote “source

reduction and resource recovery”. In terms of waste disposal, non-hazardous waste will be handed over to qualified third-party companies for treatment or unified collection and comprehensive utilization. Hazardous waste will be dealt with by

certified third-party firms.

Lithium residue, a significant solid waste in the lithium salt industry, is addressed by Tianqi Lithium through a circular economy approach to further advance high-value comprehensive recycling of lithium residue. In 2023, Tianqi Lithium

focuses on resource planning and utilization of lithium residue generated from its primary business. We actively explore new solid waste resource technology pathways for producing high-value lithium residue products, like silica-alumina

micro powder, tantalum-niobium concentrates, high-purity gypsum, and zeolite processing, gradually promoting the use of these resource products in lieu of native minerals in the downstream. Such methods can facilitate lithium residue

absorption, reduce low-value waste accumulation, and enhance the practice of a circular economy.

Biodiversity

Tianqi Lithium places great importance on biodiversity conservation during the production operations and project development process. It requires that all construction projects identify and assess the impacts on ecology and biodiversity at the design stage. The principle of avoidance takes precedence, aiming to minimize impacts on ecologically sensitive and vulnerable areas. In 2023, Tianqi Lithium did not own, lease, or manage any operational sites within or adjacent to protected zones and areas of high biodiversity outside protected zones.

The company strictly adheres to the principles of “avoidance, reducing, restoration and offset”, and fully considers biodiversity risks and conducts relevant assessments throughout the project’s construction, development, and business

operations. The processes include:

Planning and design: Before selecting a site, the project area undergoes an on-site survey to assess the environmental impact on biodiversity and natural resources. Efforts are made to minimize damage to mountains and vegetation while strictly adhering to the “ecological redline”. Reasonable and scientific environmental impact control measures are developed based on assessment results.

Construction:The company rigorously implements the “three simultaneities” of environmental protection, carrying out environmental impact assessments in parallel with construction and organizing timely acceptance checks. It also strives to

minimize the time and materials required for construction.

Operation and maintenance: Regular environmental hazard inspections are conducted alongside extensive public education activities related to ecological environmental protection, aimed at raising employees’ awareness of environmental conservation.

Post-project: Ecological restoration efforts are initiated based on the results of environmental impact assessments.

Performance & Metrics

In 2023, Tianqi Lithium completed a structural change to a three-year USD 400 million loan linked to sustainability and established a water recycling rate indicator: the water recycling rate reached 93.6% in 2023, with plans to increase it to 95% by 2024. From 2021 to 2023, the company continuously raised the proportion of recycled water usage, reaching 95.56% in 2023, achieving the target ahead of schedule. The total water withdrawal in 2023 was 1.577 million cubic meters (including 1.377 million cubic meters of freshwater), with total wastewater discharge amounting to 0.354 million cubic meters.

In 2023, Tianqi Lithium’s total particulate matter (PM) emissions amounted to 4.87 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 26%. Sulfur oxide (SOX) emissions totaled 0.70 tons, representing a 68.5% reduction compared to the previous year.

The company and all of its actively operating production bases have obtained ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification. In 2023, Tianqi Lithium maintained a 100% compliance rate for pollutant emissions; there were 0 incidents of excess emissions or violations; and zero sudden environmental incidents or significant pollution events occurred. The production bases in Tongliang, Shehong, and Jiangsu continuously conducted environmental protection training,

waste management training, and other programs for all employees in 2022 and 2023, enhancing both internal and external stakeholders’ awareness of environmental management policies and impacts. Moreover, Tianqi Lithium conducts regular external audits of its environmental management system each year, which covers all its actively operating production bases with a coverage rate of 100%.
