On November 29, Ms. Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (hereinafter referred to as "SMI"), led a delegation to visit Tianqi Lithium Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Tianqi Lithium"). Mr. Zou Jun, Director, Executive Vice President, and Chief Financial Officer of Tianqi Lithium, and Mr. Li Guo, Vice President of Tianqi Lithium, warmly welcomed the guests with their team. The delegation also included Ms. Natasha Wake, Director of External Affairs and Senior Regional Councils of SMI; Ms. Rae Hegarty, Director of Country Councils for the Global Council; Ms. Ren Fei, Director of the Multilateral Cooperation Department at the China Chamber of International Commerce (hereinafter referred to as "CCOIC"); and Mr. Zhang Qi, Executive Secretary-General of the Sustainable Development Working Committee.
During the meeting, Mr. John Zou extended a warm welcome on behalf of Tianqi Lithium to the guests from SMI and CCOIC and provided an overview of the company's operations. Subsequently, Mr. Frank Li shared insights into the company’s strategic investments, elaborating on Tianqi Lithium’s long-term development strategy centered on “strengthening upstream operations, optimizing midstream capabilities, and penetrating downstream markets,” as well as its commitment to sustainability.
Ms. Christina Wang, Director of ESG and Sustainability Department, introduced the company’s ESG philosophy, highlighting the publication of the industry’s first Carbon White Paper, White Paper on Building a Sustainable Lithium Industry under in Alignment with the Net Zero Emissions Targets. She also shared the company's ESG practices and significant achievements both domestically and internationally.
Ms. Ren Fei of CCOIC welcomed Tianqi Lithium’s membership in the SMI China Council and expressed her hope that Tianqi could work with other council members to promote sustainable development, particularly in addressing climate change and biodiversity conservation. She further encouraged Tianqi to set an example as the lead organization for the Energy Transition Working Group and the Sustainable Battery Action Group.
SMI CEO Ms. Jennifer Jordan-Saifi emphasized that the establishment of SMI aims to accelerate the energy transition, presenting a major opportunity to tackle climate change while providing a crucial platform for deepening corporate collaboration. She noted that SMI is an international platform that brings together top decision-makers from leading global companies to discuss how to drive industrial transformation and accelerate climate action in the context of highly interconnected global supply chains and financial systems.
As a new energy materials company with lithium at its core, Tianqi Lithium adheres to its mission of “Changing the world with Lithium”. Moving forward, Tianqi plans to fully explore opportunities to collaborate with the SMI Global Council, striving to take a prominent position on the international ESG stage, voice China’s perspective, propose Chinese solutions, and contribute Tianqi’s strength in the realm of global economic, environmental, and governance transformation.
The Sustainable Markets Initiative, launched by Charles III, then Prince of Wales and now King of the United Kingdom, aims to mobilize the business community to address global crises such as climate change and biodiversity loss and achieve sustainable development. The SMI China Council was officially established on August 22, 2022, and has become a vital platform for the Chinese business community to participate in global sustainable development on a broader scale, across wider fields, and at higher levels.
