On March 28, the completion ceremony of the Tianqi Lithium Innovation and Research Institute was grandly held in Meishan, Sichuan Province. Distinguished guests attended the event, including Zhao Tianshou, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Energy Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Southern University of Science and Technology; Yang Dongsheng, Deputy Secretary-General of the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government; Huang He, Secretary of the Meishan Municipal Party Committee; Wang Binda, Deputy Secretary of the Meishan Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Meishan; Chen Xuehua, Vice Director of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology; and Su Ping, Second-Level Inspector of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Economy and Information Technology. Located in the Chengdu Science and Innovation Eco-Island (Meishan Sub-Island), the Tianqi Lithium Innovation and Research Institute spans over 4,500 square meters. It will focus on research into key materials for next-generation high-performance lithium batteries, while driving breakthroughs in comprehensive mineral resource utilization, novel lithium extraction technologies, and battery recycling. The institute will synergize with Tianqi Lithium’s Chengdu headquarters to form an efficiently coordinated R&D-industrial axis, providing robust support for technological innovation and commercialization. As a vital scientific innovation hub, the Meishan Sub-Island aims to accelerate the commercialization of scientific achievements, attract top-tier innovation resources and talent, and advance regional industrial upgrading.

Zhao Tianshou, Director of the Energy Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Southern University of Science and Technology, delivered a keynote speech titled Energy Storage Technologies for Carbon Neutrality. He congratulated Tianqi Lithium on the inauguration of the institute and emphasized that energy transition is fundamental to achieving carbon neutrality. “Innovation in lithium-based materials is critical to the lithium battery industry and the broader energy transformation,” he stated. “Breakthroughs in lithium materials hold promise for enhancing battery energy density, lifespan, and safety. We look forward to the institute’s contributions to advancing high-quality development in the lithium sector.”

He highlighted Sichuan’s progress in building a world-class lithium industry cluster, utilizing its abundant clean energy and mineral resources. “The establishment of this institute lays a solid foundation for breakthroughs in core lithium battery technologies,” Yang remarked. “We urge Tianqi Lithium, as a leader in the industry chain, to strengthen collaboration across the sector and enhance the resilience and security of the lithium supply chain.”

Liu Yang, Dean of Tianqi Lithium Innovation Experimental Institute and Academic Leader in Materials Science, delivered a speech at the event. He specifically introduced the current primary research and development achievements of the Innovation Experimental Research Institute. These achievements include the world's first preparation technology for lithium sulfide, a key raw material for sulfur-based solid electrolytes, which can enhance battery energy density and safety performance. New anode materials such as ultra-thin lithium foil were introduced as ideal candidates for high-energy-density solid-state batteries and lithium-sulfur battery technologies. These products have broad applications across various fields, including low-altitude manned aircraft, humanoid robots, new energy vehicles, portable electronic devices, and energy storage systems.In addition,Liu emphasized that these innovative outcomes by Tianqi are not just admired in the laboratory but are undergoing pilot testing and are poised to be industrialized, representing the rising stars of tomorrow.
Tianqi Lithium has obtained the ISO56001 International Innovation Management System Certification and the IMSPP Innovation Management Capability Grading Evaluation, becoming the first company in China's lithium industry to achieve both international Accreditations. Meanwhile, the Research Institute will serve as Tianqi Lithium's talent hub, gathering high-level scientific research talents to promote the exchange and cooperation of knowledge, technology, and experience, and build a diverse innovation co-creation platform to provide strong support for the high-quality development of the regional economy.
Relevant units of the province, cities, and new districts, Sichuan Innovation-Driven Development Center, relevant managers of Tianqi Lithium Industry and experts from academic partners participated in the event.
